The Passo di Stelvio has 48 switchbacks on this side! The road was built in 1824. In the middle of each switchback there is a stone set into the guard rail with the number of the corner, starting with 48 at the bottom. A pass pin from the Stelvio is like a badge of honor. The Stelvio is not far from another of the Alps biggies - the Timmelsjoch. We did both passes on the same day. For my money, the Timmelsjoch was a lot more fun! In fact, we crossed it 3 times. I could live at the bottom of the Timmelsjoch and I'd think I'd died and gone to heaven. Check out how steep the road is, at the bottom of this picture.
