What is the Hygienic Art Show?

The Hygienic Art Show is an unusual art show held in New London, Connecticut during the last weekend of January. The 1997 show will be the eighteenth annual. The Hygienic Art Show is open to all, is unjuried and unjudged, there is no entry fee for exhibitors or viewers, and most important, there is no censorship of any kind. The only rule is that each exhibitor is limited to showing one piece. Last year we had more than 250 artists showing work. Due to the nature of the show we attract controversial cutting-edge art that would be turned away from the tamer juried shows in the area.

In conjunction with the main art show there are also other events. In the past there have been poetry readings, dramatic presentations, independent film exhibits, dance, etc. There is also a segment of the Hygienic devoted to children and teenagers called the Hygienic Young Artists show.

The Hygienic Art Show is produced by Hygienic Art, Inc., a nonprofit group that is open to anyone that would like to become involved. As we progress into the planning stages each year, notice of planning meetings are published in the New London Day, as is the schedule of events as they solidify. If you are in or near New London and would like to become involved, you can call Vinny Scarano at (203) 442-6855 or else drop me (Bob Farace) email at bluemuse@aol.com

But why is it called the Hygienic?

Because the first several years of the show it was held at the old Hygienic Restaurant at the corner of Bank Street and Golden Street in New London. (Don't ask me how the restaurant got the name; even the restaurant owner's granddaughter is unable to tell me after asking her family.) The semiofficial symbol of the show is the lobster. The graphic at the top of this page is a colored and stylized version of the graphic by Grippo; he created it based on the neon lobster from the Hygienic Restaurant's sign.

After the restaurant closed, the art show kept the name but nomadically wandered all over town. For the past few years its home has been the El 'n' Gee Club on Golden Street.
