As mentioned in Lesson 4 Part 1, fills can add tension or bring relief to a musical phrase. The drum fill is a place in the music where the drummer can be creative and add energy and excitement to propel the band to another level. However, keeping steady time whether playing a beat or a fill should be the drummers first concern. Review the drum key and locate the tom-toms on the staff.

The following beat/fill combinations are not complex, but through my years of teaching I've heard many students who weren't really thinking about the sound they were getting from their drums, nor did they realize how much they sped up or slowed down while going from a beat to a fill and back to a beat. Getting the best sound from your instrument and playing good time are the first steps toward becoming a sought after player.
