Before we go any further I'd like to talk about REPEAT SIGNS. A repeat sign is a symbol placed in a measure instead of a note or rest to indicate that the previous measure should be played again, or, repeated.
Here are three types of repeat signs:
Ex. #1 - Single Repeat

The single repeat sign can be used as many times as needed as long as the rhythmic idea doesn't change.
Ex. #1a

Example #2 is a two bar repeat sign. This sign tells the performer to repeat the previous two measures. It can also be used as many times as needed.

Example #3 shows a pair of "Bracket" repeat signs. Each sign made up of a thick line, a thin line and two dots, the first sign is placed to the left of the first measure, the second sign to the right of the last measure. These are used to show that a longer section of music is to be repeated, but can also be used in a single measure.
Ex. #3 - Bracket Repeat Signs.

Ex. #3a - Bracket Repeat In A Single Measure.

The 8X in the above example tells the performer to play that measure eight times in total.
