First review the placement of percussion sounds on the staff. You could also choose to put any sound on any line or space as long as you include a drum key at the beginning of your composition. I'm using what would be considered a traditional or standard drum key .

In Lesson 2 part 2 I introduced a two drum beat using the quarter note rhythm. Although it is a simple beat to understand I would suggest playing it with a metronome at different tempos, keeping an even balance in volume.
Counting out loud, 1 2 3 4 , or subdividing the eighth note, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +, or subdividing the sixteenth note, 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a is strongly suggested.

Once you have control of this basic idea, you can put anything you can think of on top of it. The most common sound to add would be some kind of a cymbal, either a ride cymbal or a hi-hat part. In the next example I have added the quarter note rhythm played on a closed hi-hat (HH)

In the next example I have added the eighth note rhythm played on a closed hi-hat (HH)

In the next example I have added the up-beat eighth note rhythm played on a closed hi-hat (HH)

Remember to experiment with other sounds after you have perfected these very basic, yet very important beats.
