Introduction:
The Cape May County Dolphin Survey was established in 1989 to begin
gathering data about the bottlenose dolphins in the waters surrounding
Cape May County, New Jersey. Population and migration data has been gathered
through the use of photo-id techniques.

Introduction:
The Marine Animal Rescue Program at the National Aquarium in Baltimore
has initiated a project for the study of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops
truncatus) in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Ocean
and the Delaware Bay, all waters adjacent to the DelMarVa Peninsula. The
Initial goals are to identify areas, and times of year, of dolphin abundance
and to target these areas for future photo-id follow-up studies.

Introduction:
We are primarily involved in bottlenose dolphin photo-identification
studies. Nan Bowles and Keith Rittmaster curate a bottlenose dolphin
dorsal fin catalog initiated in 1985 by Keith Rittmaster and Vicky
Thayer. It is used 1) to study dolphin presence patterns around
Beaufort, NC and 2) to collaborate with other researchers from NJ to
FL to match fins to learn about travel patterns and routes.

Introduction:
Students and faculty at Coastal Carolina University conduct research
on bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) along the "Grand Strand"
region of the South Carolina Coast, which runs approximately 60 miles
from the North Carolina Line to Winyah Bay, centered around the
Myrtle Beach area. The research objectives are to identify seasonal
trends in dolphin abundance and location, and to assess the relative
contributions of migratory, resident, and/or seasonal resident
populations. Our efforts are concentrated on (1) weekly or biweekly
transect surveys along the coast from Murrells Inlet to Little River
Inlet (the northern 30 miles of the SC coast), and (2) photo-ID of
dolphins in the creeks of North Inlet and potentially Winyah Bay, as
well as coastal dolphins during the fall migratory peak.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Unfortunately, we do not offer opportunities for volunteers
outside of Coastal Carolina University. One of the important goals
of the research is to provide field experience for our undergraduate
majors. With over 400 marine science majors, we do not have any
extra spaces on the waiting list.

Coastal Carolina Universtiy is able to accept tax-deductible
donations which can be specified for specific projects. These can be
in the form of money or equipment, such as boats, boating supplies,
computer hardware and software, or camera equipment. For further
