POWHATAN COUNTY

POWHATAN COUNTY might have been the above David's family home at one time. At least a Court case of 5-7-1822 lists David and Satterwhite Tyree as joint defendants in a law suit in which judgment of $355 was finally (5-16-1823) set against Satterwhite and one Pleasant Farley. This too was found and sent in by RESEARCHER CHARLES L. TYREE, E-mail (Internet:ctyree3@gnn.com) or (Cltyree@ezin.net).

Satterwhite Tyree and wife Rhoda sell their land in Powhatan Co. 1823 to David Tyree for $920.

David Tyree and wife Martha sold land to William Magruder, Powhatan Co., 1824; this was the land sold by Satterwhite and Rhoda to David earlier; David received $725 for the land.

Satterwhite Tyree m. Rhoda Taylor in Powhatan Co., Va., 2-17-1813.

This may be the same David who was registered in Powhatan Co. 1772 with a wife Ann. Also the David Tyree who was noted ink Prince Edward Co., 1783-1785.

RESEARCHER SHEPHERD YOUNG TYREE liked to speculate that David's first wife was a Satterwhite -- thus the name of his "son". There is a record in Cumberland County that David Tyree m. a Martha Toney in 1797 and they lived on the land of her father, Edward Toney (his will is available in Powhatan County). Hmm! -- A number of Toney's moved into Raleigh and Fayette Counties, Va. (became W.Va.) about the same time as Satterwhite Tyree.

Joseph N.E. Tyree, orphan of Timothy Tyree, was indentured to Peter Talbot 1836 in Powhatan Co.

From Revolutionary War Records, POWHATAN COUNTY, William Tyree served V8c447 from Nov. 28, 1776 to Feb. 28, 1777 as a private in Col. Josiah Parker's 5th Virginia Regiment -- John Pleasant was his captain. Later William was a Sergeant in Col. Stubblefield's Regiment (sometimes Col. Faulkner) when James Owen was his captain; this service beginning Apr. or May, 1780. He has been confused with our William Tyree; our West Virginia "lebanty-lebenth" cousin, Margaret Bannigan L'Engle, took a D.A.R. affiliation using him as antecedent (well both Williams had wives named Sarah but their children were very different). He made a pension application Aug. 28, 1832 from Smith County, Tennessee, application # W-6331, in which he claimed he had been born in Powhatan County December 1752 and drafted into the army in Prince Edward County Apr. or May, 1780. He then served 6 months as a wagon master. His widow, Sarah, applied for his pension 1-19-1837 from Smith County, Tennessee, stating William had died Sept. 30, 1833; that they had been married in Buckingham County, Virginia in 1773 or 1774 and had 7 or 8 children -- the oldest being Flanders who was born 3-19-1775. William was pensioned on the West Tennessee Pension Rolls, certificate #7523 which was issued 4-20-1833 under Act of 1832 at $30 per annum. Sarah was pensioned on certificate #311 issued 5-1-1837 for the same $30 per annum. (More on this family in Smith County, Tennessee.)
