NEW KENT COUNTY

Formed in 1654 from York County. It was not an original shire; but as York County was reduced (the very northern area became a rather tentative Northumberland County in 1648), New Kent County was left to play such a prominent roll that it is put here for practical purposes.

Several Tyrees were listed in Blissland Parish (eastern New Kent) as caretakers of others. For instance in 1729, Benjamin Tyree was assigned to take and teach James Curnute to knit and weave; the arrangement did not work out; Curnute was removed within the year and passed to another caretaker. Among other assignments, Benjamin Tyree was to keep Sarah Tyree's children in 1746; Lucy the orphan of Roger Tyree died in her 11th year; however Roger Tyree (?Jr.) seems to have lived on.

From Blissland Parish Register circa 1760:

For the church wardens for keeping Isaac Tyree, 700 (?tobb.).

To James Tyree, his acct. for boarding Walter Rawleigh & his prentices 71 days while working on the Upper Church: 2.10.0. Also, for wheat, bricks & lime for Upper Church: 0.7.0. Also, to James Tyree for keeping John, Son of Daniel Stewart, from 1762 to this time: 800 (?tobb.).

To William Tyree, his acct. for keeping workers on Upper Church 4.13.4. Also William Tyree often made coffins at the church order.

Of the Tyrees listed in the Parish register (Benjamin, Sarah, Lucy, Roger, James, Isaac and William), perhaps the most intriguing caretaking experience was to go to William. The story began in 1727 when Samuel Curle rented the Parish Glebe for 400 pounds of tobacco for one year. He was allowed to keep needy parishioners there. In the year 1742 (at least) he was forgiven the rent (?for his services); however his own family members provided many "needy". Richard Creed Curle had an infirmity and Blissland Parish had to subsidize him for years. Jemima Curle, the widow of Jeremiah Curle, was allowed to receive pay for cleaning the Church; she was eventually given the title of Sextoness. But Jemima had a son, William, who had to be "kept" and "dressed" (noted in 1758). In 1758 Jemima's daughter, Rebecca, was ÒkeptÓ -- under Church sponsorship -- by her Uncle Richard. In 1767 a coffin was provided by the Church for Jemima Curle's child (?William). In 1771 a donation was taken up for Jemima Curle (?as Sextoness). In 1780 Ann Curle, the daughter of the widow Susannah, was maintained by the Church. In 1784 Jemima Curle was being paid to maintain others. Also in 1784 the orphan, William Raleigh, was being maintained by Samuel Curle -- the male head of the household where Jemima held court. During these struggles, Nov. 29, 1773, William Tyree was paid to keep and maintain Richard Curle, the orphan of Richard Curle, deceased; later this became a permanent placement (did Richard Curle take the name of Tyree?).

Richard Tyree b. 7-22-1775. The use of the names Anderson and Pleasant above
suggests a connection between this family and the well documented Richard
Tyree who went to Campbell County; because that Richard had 3 half bros.
(Samuel, Pleasant & Richmond who married sisters named Anderson); also the
above Mary Crew was Quaker and that Richard chose a Quaker wife. However
that Richard was said to have been born 1779.

            Mary Ann Otey b. 5-10-1805.
            Richard Tyree Otey b. 6-9-1808.
(Could be the Richard who had 3 half bros. and they all went to Campbell Co., BUT the New Kent County Census of 1850 says a Richard Tyree, 72, no occupation was living in the household of Sally Woodward age 57.)

James Tyree b. 3-20-1743, d. 1-3-1785, of New Kent County, m. York County 5-5-1768 Matilda Ballard b. 5-10-1747, d. New Kent County 9-7-1806. James has been listed as serving during the Revolutionary War as a Lt., it is also claimed that he owned the Tyree Plantation in New Kent County where Lafayette made a stop (6-28-1781 thru 7-5-1781) with his forces as he persued Cornwallis to Yorktown (since one Willam Tyree presented the American government with a bill for Lafayette's stay at the Tyree Plantation, can it be assumed that James' father was William?). In New Kent tax records, James is listed as holding 150A, 1 dwelling and 4 out-buildings; this began to be referred to as the "James Estate" as early as 1782 although he did not die until 1785 (maybe he was incapacitated?) when he left this estate to his son Francis; probate of 1786 names w. Matilda.

Francis Tyree b. 11-2-1773, d. 8-24-1823 while living in Richmond,
    m. 11-3-1795 Mary Taylor b. 9-7-1778, d. 1-11-1838 dau. of Richard Taylor.
Cyrus Tyree (whose very lenghty list goes into Tennessee, found later
        in this chapter).
(Of even greater interest is the illusive William Tyree who served in the Rev. from Powhatan County and finally died, a pensioned veteran, in Smith County, Tennessee; his descendents turn up in modern Texas. This William Tyree's mother's people were said to be from Powhatan County. Is it possible the illusive William Tyree should fit here?)

The following suggests a mixup could easily be made with the above. It seems
the 1st James Tyree was heir to William Tyree of the Tyree Plantation; while
the 2nd was a son of David of the Chickahominy Swamp trades (see p. 13).
James Tyree b. 1725 of the Revolutionary Services from New Kent County, d. 1782.
Francis Tyree of Blissland Parish, d. Aug. 9, 1808 New Kent County (cross
        reference with page 12.).
            Miranda Jane Tyree b. 2-11-1790.
            Abner Tyree b.c. 1792, d. 1825 unmarried.
            Caleb Tyree b.c. 1795, d.c. 1839, m. Susan C. (in Richmond Census)
