DUNMORE COUNTY

And then thereÕs DUNMORE COUNTY. Dunmore was named for John Murray Dunmore who came to the Colonies as a royal appointee. The Shenandoah area was created Dunmore County in 1772 from Frederick County; and the occupying Shawnee Indians were defeated in Lord DunmoreÕs War in 1774, which opened the Ohio Valley for settlement. However, Lord Dunmore was in continual conflict with the Colonial Assembly and, as the last Royal Governor of Virginia, he was forced to flee to an offshore British warship when the American Revolution broke out in 1775. Dunmore returned to England July 1776; and the large area he opened was renamed Shenandoah County in 1778. The Dunmore name has long been forgotten; researchers who find it in old notations are left to wonder where they are.

Some of it is here:

During the Revolutionary War, Michael Reader's Company (in which Reader was Captain and Major of the Militia of Dunmore County) lists William Tyree (he made 2nd Lt. 6-20-1781) and James Price (he made 1st Lt. 6-19-1780). BIRD-SAMUEL PAPERS list William Tyree (the only Tyree) and 10 Price men of Dunmore County: Anger, Edward, Even, Meredith, Meredith Jr., John, Thomas, Zachrey, Sr., Zachery, Jr., and Phillip.

William Tyree was married in Greenbrier County 5-3-1776 by Rev. John Alderson, Jr. (Baptist) to Elizabeth Prise (both bride and groom of Dunmore). On 6-25-1776 the same minister performed the marriage of James Prise to Catherine Smith. The marriages are recorded on the same record sheet. Was Elizabeth a sister to James?

Then a faceless notation says among Dunmore residents married in Greenbrier were:
William Tyree -- whose line traces to
        John Tyree b. 1779
            William A. Tyree b. 1811
Sarah Tyree b. 1860 in Bath County.

William Tyree from Bath County m. Elizabeth Price 1776 in Dunmore County?????

William (X) Tyree is witness with Thomas Price to Edward (X) PriceÕs will; Edward d.1787; the will mentions his brother Zachariah Price.
