Taiwan is a mountainous island in the South China Sea, about 90 miles (140 kilometers) off the Chinese coast. The Chinese call the island Taiwan, meaning terraced bay.

The flag
has a red field and a white sun on a blue canton which appears in
the upper left-hand corner. Red stands for liberty and sacrifice
while white stands for fraternity and honesty. It was adopted in
1928.
