Rainbow Wind is an Internet resource for Lesbigay Pagans and their friends. It was formed in the summer of 1995 as a response to three needs: 1) the need of Pagans to develop a greater sense of connectedness with the Pagans community, 2) the need to define the frequently undefined role of Lesbigays and trangendered people in Paganism, and 3) the need to respond to the wave of attacks on Lesbigays, TGs, and Pagans by the radical Christian fundamentalists who have gained great influence over both the Republican and Democrat parties.

As a group, I fear that we have been inactive for a while. There is a mailing list at Onelist.com, though (see above), which has been active for over a year. Our church, the Path of the Personal Divine, has become legally incorporated, and several of the members (including myself and my partner) are active in the community in one form or another. We have also been through a couple of hard disks since the site was set up, which was a partial cause for the long time it took to update the website. Some of our records were lost in each crash.

However, the time has come for Rainbow Wind to become active again. "Diversity" has become a dirty word in campaign rhetoric. Pentagrams, and even Stars of David, are being labeled "gang insignia" and taken from our children. Gays and lesbians are still under assault, and as we suspected, Pagans have also come under public scrutiny by legislators. U.S. Rep. Bob Barr and Senator Strom Thurmond attempted to prohibit Pagan rituals on army bases, while Christian worship there would continue. Even more frighteningly, President George W. Bush has stated publicly that Wicca is not a "real religion".

Meanwhile, the Religious Right continues its attempts to force its religion down the throats of others. Its "Hang Ten" campaign has led to several state legislatures passing laws favoring (or even requiring) the posting of the Ten Commandments in the schools, courts, and other public buildings. And since organized prayer at football games has been struck down by the Supreme Court, they are staging "impromptu" prayer and suggesting that those who are offended or feel marginalized by forced participation come late to the game or not at all.

It is time for Pagans to become more politically aware and active! We hope that through our website, e-mail list, and our RL contacts, that we can inform and encourage Pagan involvement in the political process. If you have suggestions on how this can be accomplished, or ways of increasing public respect for Pagans, please contact us and we will see about spreading the word.
