Favorite links and lots of other resources for Silent Death enthusiasts.

This site contains information for Silent Death enthusiasts, whether you are just learning the game or are an old hand. We've included some material on tactics, ship designs, news of interest to SD players, and some interesting material ariel combat and wargaming in general.

The authors/perpetratiors/instigators of this site, Sheldon Greaves and Lee Erickson, are the authors of the supplement Silent Death:Fighter Tactics Manual, (see the review on RPGnet by Sam Lindsay-Levine!) as well as other forthcoming goodies, which will be reported on as they get close to press. We take a rather ecelctic approach to playing SD (and wargaming in general); we have found that this game is realistic enough that the lessons learned in real, historical conflicts--especially air battles--are a rich source of ideas for SD players looking for solid tactics, as well as scenario and campaign ideas. With close to half a century of wargaming experience between us, ours is an eclectic approach. We've already rocked a few boats and had a rolicking good time doing so.

Enjoy the site! Write and tell us what you think.

The Ready Room

The WAM Quote of the Month:

"I poured on coal to get a black exhaust, suddenly stalled and went down tail first, hoping I could get out of it in time. The Hun shot out in front of me. I came out of the dive, roared up and around and over him. I fired the rest of the drum, put in another drum (try it sometime if you ever find an old Camel in a museum) working stick, rudder, your elevator controls, feeling the oil gage drop--one hand loading, wind tearing at you, the Hun circling to get behind and below.

"And he had me. My motor sounded like a grease-spitting iron skillet frying flounders.

"It's marvelous for your nerves, dying in a sodden sun. Makes you think, repent, shrinks your scrotum. I could feel the plane shudder as he fired short bursts, but lots of them. Then there was the sound of a Klaxon (we carried them to signal ground patrols) and a big blue fighter with English oval insignia was to the left of us. It had two Vickers guns firing through the air screw, and the Hun just went up into an exploding rose."

Q'raj Void Protectorate Expansion Nearing Release

After many delays, corrections, expansions, and general futzing around, the Q'raj Void Protectorate house book (written by WAM's own Sheldon Greaves) is about to see the light of print. The QVP are descended from original colonists who came from the Middle East regions of Old Earth. They have a reputation among other houses for being very no-nonsense space warriors.

The QVP expansion will feature several new ships, most of them armed with some new technology developed by the QVP (or more precisely, by it's author). In addition, this expansion will feature some nice refits of a few existing fighters, and, an SD first, warhound refits. These new behemoths will make the SD universe a lot more interesting--and dangerous. Silent Death: Q'raj Void Protectorate is due to be released September of 1999. For more information, see the preview I wrote for The Guild Companion, an online e-zine for gamers.

Silent Death: More Than Valor

Leland Erickson is the main author of this new ground-breaking expansion for Silent Death enthusiasts. This book introduces a system for giving individual pilots and house squadrons traits or quirks that make the game more interesting.

In addition to the new rules, the book contains a capsule history of the air warrior in combat and lists personalities for each of the "great houses" in the Silent Death universe, including the Hatchlings.

ICE expects that this new expansion will be hitting the shelves sometime in October of 1999.

The War College

We have this thing about tactics. Below are some short articles about some of our experiments and discoveries.

The Hanger

Silent Death is unusual in letting players design their own ships. This section is devoted to ship designs you might want to try in your SD games.

  • The China Clipper Class Luxury Liner. A good design for pirate scenarios, or any game where you need to protect (or attack) civilian targets.
  • Fifty-ton Fighters. An undiscovered secret weapon?
  • The Harpy, WAM's answer to the Salamander.
  • Two Ships That Use Mines. Two ships that explore the rules for mines in Silent Death: Space Junk.

Research and Development

We like to draw on history as a source of ideas. We also have lives outside of SD and gaming (unbelievable, but true). Here are some other links of interest that we think you'll enjoy:

  • The Wartime Journal, a fascinating collection of material concerning war and history.
  • Science Fiction & Fantasy Design & Implementation. The owner of this page is a master model maker with lots of interesting design ideas. Worth looking at for inspiration if nothing else.
  • Reviresco, an outstanding dealer site with some very innovative figures for both sci-fi and historical gaming. There are some good figures that would work well for Silent Death.
  • Fighter Tactics Academy. This is an absolutely incredible site on the real world of modern fighter combat. Lots of excellent historical and explanatory material. Well-designed, heavy on content (Repeat after me: Content is Good).
  • In the same vein, we recommend the U.S. Air Force Museum.
  • Luftwaffe '46. That's right, 1946. This is a remarkable collection of information on German military aircraft that were either on the drawing board or in the early prototype phase when the war ended. A great Gee-Whiz site for general ideas and niftiness.
  • BayCon. The major sci-fi and fantasy multimedia convention in the Bay Area.
  • The Military History Page. Lots of interesting historical information.
  • To get a sense of how real space war has evolved, take a look at the online version of Space Handbook - a War Fighter's Guide to Space, Vol. 1. This is a manual containing a history of military involvement in space up to the Gulf War.
  • An excellent source on military issues in space at Space Policy Project page.
  • Here is another fine bibliography on Space Warfare maintained by Chris Stokes.
  • Last, but not least, the home page of Don Dennis, the intrepid editor for Silent Death products at ICE. Don also maintains a list of other Silent Death pages.

Also, for all you aspiring tacticians out there, we are pleased to present the Official Western Apostles of Mayhem Tactical Reading List. If you master the stuff on this page, please let us know before we play so we can arrange to be somewhere else.
