WHAT IS A BOER BUCK WORTH???

What is a Boer buck worth? Whether you are looking to purchase a purebred buck to improve your existing meat herd, or you are trying to improve your registered herd, WHAT IS A BUCK WORTH TO YOU? You may even find that purchasing two bucks is better in the long run, to take advantage of the price of higher percentage breeding and market stock.

You may be on the other side of the equation and have a purebred buck you wish to sell, and are not sure what you should ask as a fair selling price (also check out our National Price page). The following picture shows an Alpine, Boer x Alpine, and Boer carcass. This is shown to help prove that some of the numbers used in the following tables are not really exaggerations.

The profit potential can even be further enhanced if you choose to either raise percentage (1/2, 3/4, 7/8) does, or using these same percentages as prospect market goats. All of these different breeding options can provide increased profit of up to $700 each.

Some breeders purchase two bucks, and breed 1/2 of the herd to each buck. They then switch bucks to breed the original animals and their female offspring. Following the second year, they either continue crossing the two bucks, or purchase replacement buck(s) to continue their upbreeding program.

If you are raising purebreds, purchasing the right buck to improve the quality of the resulting kids you will be offering for sale, can potentially increase your profits 100 - 1,000%. If you currently charge $1,000 per kid, you could be charging $2,000 - $10,000 for the improved quality. How much would you be willing to pay for a buck that could provide that value to your breeding program?

That does not include profits that can be made by selling semen and using the improved buck for embryo transfers as well.
