Galveston City Hall
The current Galveston City hall, built in 1916, is located on 25th street near Downtown Galveston. It is the third structure to serve as City Hall in Galveston. The first two were destroyed by hurricanes. The second City Hall was a large victorian style structure that was heavily damaged by Hurricane Carla in 1961, and torn down afterwards. Galveston and her Port are considered one of the oldest and most historical cities in Texas. Galveston's port , the 1st in Texas, was established in 1825 by the Republic of Mexico, and while Galveston was not officially recognized as a city until 1839 (when the Republic of Texas began organizing cities) her roots go back to 1817 when pirate Jean Laffitte established his outpost on Galveston Island. Galveston was the largest and most important city in Texas until the early part of the 20th century and a lot is owed to Galveston, because without her Texas would not have become what she is today.
