The UTMB Complex. Established in 1891 as the University of Texas Medical
Department. In 1919 it was renamed The
University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Employing more
than 13,600 people, The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB)
is the largest employer in Galveston and the 3rd largest employer in the
entire Houston-Galveston Area. In addition, UTMB has more hospital
beds than any other hospital in the entire Houston-Galveston Area.
The UTMB campus covers more than 86 acres and is
a modern heath science facility made up of 73+ major buildings. UTMB
consists of seven hospitals, an affiliated Shriners Burns Institute, over
100 outpatient clinics, two institutes, four schools, a major medical library
(The Moody Medical Library) and many
research facilities. UTMB was one of the first medical schools in the
State of Texas, but it is not the oldest hospital in Texas. St. Mary's
Hospital, in Galveston, was founded in 1866 and it also established a medical
school. St. Mary's was the oldest private hospital in the state until
February of 1996 when the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word closed
the hospital and sold its facilities and assets to UTMB. UTMB has renamed
the hospital the Rebecca Sealy Hospital and it is dedicated to serving Women
and Children. UTMB is the only state-funded multicategorical health
center in Texas.
