The Rosenberg Library
Rosenberg Library, Circa 1910 |
Galveston's Rosenberg Library is the oldest public library in the State of Texas. The Galveston Public Library was founded in 1874, and it's holdings were moved to the Rosenberg Library in 1904. The Rosenberg Library is named after the promient 19th century Galveston businessman Henry Rosenberg. Because it is the oldest public library in the state, it contains many original documents of the Republic and later the State of Texas. |
| It also has one of the best Genealogy Departments, The Galveston and Texas History Center (GTHC), in the State. This is due in part to the fact that the majority of immigrants coming into Texas during the 19th and early 20th centuries, came through Galveston. In 1971, with the addition of the Moody wing, the library was almost tripled in size. |
