Garten Verein Dancing Pavilion
|
During the 1800s, many immigrants into Galveston came from Germany and the present day Czech Republic. They settled in Galveston and in 1879 built this pavilion, which still stands and is used today, for parties and many community events. Galveston still has a large population of Germanic decent and traditions such as Oktoberfest are still celebrated at the Garten Verein. In 1998, the pavilion underwent a $1 million dollar restoration, thanks to a grant from the Harris & Eliza Kempner Fund. |
