Some of the facilities that this building houses are the Main Galveston Post Office, the U.S. Federal District Court of Southeast Texas, U.S. Customs, and the oldest National Weather Service Office west of the Mississippi, just to name a few.

Galveston has had 4 federal buildings (one under the Republic of Texas 1836-1845). This one was constructed between 1886 and 1891. By the 1930s the need for a new federal building was recognized. In 1937 it was demolished and the present limestone-faced federal building was constructed on the same spot. |
