The Galveston County Courthouse
Galveston County was created in 1838 by The Republic of Texas. It encompasses not only Galveston Island, but the Bolivar Peninsula, and some of the Texas mainland adjacent to Galveston Bay. Before Galveston County was created, Galveston Island, and the City of Galveston, were part of Harris County and the Galveston County mainland were part of Brazoria County. The seat of Galveston County is, of course, Galveston.

This courthouse, built in 1899, was the 2nd county courthouse constructed on this spot. It was demolished and replaced with the one above after being severely damaged in 1961 by Hurricane Carla. An interesting note: some of columns from the courthouse were saved, they are now at the entrance to a subdivision in Sugarland, Tex. |
