My grandmother died when I was eight. Since then I've always felt the spirit of this spritely, warm woman with me, and even though my mother vehemently denied the possibility I knew that my grandmother had become my guardian angel.
In early summer of 1995 I had just turned 20, and was driving the stretch of highway I had to travel several hours every day, and I was exhausted. It was a four-lane freeway, and I was in the second lane to the left. I had managed to stay awake until this point, but barely. The road danced ahead of me and my eyelids fought to close.
Suddenly I heard a voice in the passenger seat, urging me loudly, "Change lanes, NOW!" As I had been taught as a child to do what my grandmother said without question, I moved my car into the lefthand lane without even looking. The semi-truck that was flanking me on the right drifted into the lane where my car would have been, and I slowed down, horrified, as it crossed in front of me and went onto the left shoulder of the road. The driver must have awoken at this point. He made his way back into the inside lane, but ended up pulling off the road after about a quarter mile.
I pulled off the highway the first chance I had. It was a rest stop. The scent of my grandmother's perfume permeated my car and sparked my memory. Her voice reverberated in my head. I stepped out of my car and fell to my knees, and I wept because all around me were these little purple flowers that used to grow in her yard so long ago. I said a little prayer, thanking God and my grandmother for saving my life.
