This is a story that I consider a part of my marital history, and one that I intend to pass on to my children when they are older. It never fails to make me stop and think about the life that awaits me in the "hereafter". I had often wondered if my relatives who have passed on before me truly know who I am or even care, but after this experience, I have no doubts.
My husband is a truly gifted individual. He has had a spiritual gift since he was very young and has shared some very personal experiences with me in regards to this. In addition to other abilities, he is sometimes able to communicate with spirits through dreams. This is what happened on our first train trip together.
He was in the Navy, stationed in California, which is where my family lives. His family lives in the midwest . We had been dating for a while and became engaged in the summer. My family had met him, but I had not yet met his family, so we took a trip to his mother's house for Christmas that year. We flew out and spent a week and a half, then took a train back toLos Angeles. We had a wonderful time, and it was on this trip that I knew for certain I was doing the right thing by marrying this man. I hoped he was as sure of his decision as I was. I remember watching him sleep as the train rattled on through the night.
When he woke up in the morning, he told me that he had just had one of the most vivid dreams he can recall. He told me that in his dream, he had been walking along when a man he had never seen before came up to him and said,"So, you're going to marry my granddaughter?" He told the man, "Yes, sir, I am." Then he woke up. He described the man to me, and I was surprised, because he was describing my grandfather from what I could tell.
I say this because I only remember one grandfather in my life, and he died when I was twelve or so. The other grandfather was my mother's father, who died when I was still a baby. I did not know him and do not remember him, but I have seen pictures of him in my mother's things. The person my fiance was describing sounded an awful lot like my mother's long deceased father. I did not tell him this, though. At the time, I thought I was just being silly.
When we arrived in Los Angeles, we met up with my family. Neither one of us discussed the dream with anyone, and the subject did not come up again until one night a few days later. We were at my mother's house having dinner. She does geneaology as a hobby and had some things she wanted to share. She went into the back bedroom and returned with a box full of pictures and other such artifacts that she had recently acquired from an aunt. We started going through the items one at a time, passing them around and discussing them. Among the items was a picture of my grandfather. My fiance saw the picture in the box, snatched it up and handed it to me, saying "This is him, this is the man from my dream."
I told him that that was my grandfather, and explained that I had never known him. Then we both got goosebumps. At that moment, I knew he had spoken with my mother's father. Over the years, I have learned to believe in my husband's intuition more than my own. I am positive that he is guided by people I have not yet met, some of whom are probably related to me. I know for a fact that his life has been saved more than once due to some spirit or angel, and I know also that my children have some of his same gift. I feel truly blessed to have a source of guidance such as my grandfather available to me, and I wonder what he thinks about my life and my children as he watches us.
