My family and I lived in a very old mansion built in 1863 by a US senator who was also in the lumber business. The house has quite a history, and we spent three very interesting years there. The first thing we learned was that a picture had been taken one New Year's Eve that obviously had several ghosts in it. The ghosts seemed to be looking through a tall and skinny window on the back porch at the party going on inside. The ghosts looked like children. One girl looked about 14 years old or so with a beautiful white gown and a crown made of flowers. Two children were looking over her shoulder and she was holding another little girl's hand.
My parents looked into the history of the house at a main library and found out that the mansion had once been a school for girls of wealthy families. There were seven yearbooks from those years. As we looked through them, we noticed a picture of a girl sitting in a chair with a white gown and a crown made of flowers. Standing next to her was a little girl with blond curly hair. It was a picture of the May Crowning celebration they held every year next to the house. Both of the girls looked exactly like the girls in the ghost picture.
A funny thing happened a while later. One of the teachers who had taught at the school came to visit us. She was very old but had fond memories of the time. She told us the girl with the crown had died in her freshman year at the school. The other little girl had died in her forties or so.
Later, we tore apart the wall of the window that those ghosts were looking through to restore the room to its original condition. With great surprise we realized that the window those ghosts were looking through was actually a door to the original house. This is one of many amazing true stories that happened at the old house.
