When I was 13 years old,  I travelled with my maternal aunt to a Native American spiritual camp.  The annual conference lasted a week in the mountains and Native spiritual people travelled from all over North America to practice spiritual ceremonies and pray together. I had been there before with her and looked forward to this event.

This time was different because a few people were drinking and partying, and this was certainly not the norm.  This was totally forbidden. The energy there felt bad, not like the usual good feeling.  Also, there were people there who were not into good medicine but were into bad medicine.

Anyways, one night, my aunt and I were sleeping in our tipi.  It was raining.  Just before dawn, I woke up because we had not fixed our tipi properly to keep out the rain. I was wet and cold! My aunt was sleeping right next to me, on the outside, so if I was wet so was she.  I wasn't soaking wet but parts of my blanket were wet.

I couldn't wake her up to adjust our blankets. She was totally out cold. I turned around to face the dying embers of our fire in search of warmth. I was then scared out of my wits when I saw a big man-ghoul with red eyes sitting across from me on the other side of the firepit. I could not make out his features as he was totally black, devoid of features, shadows or color. But he had red eyes! He was sitting there rocking back and forth staring at me. He did not say anything to me, just stared and rocked, which made him more terrifying.  I got really scared, and figured he would go away if i closed my eyes and didn't look for a while.

I was wrong! I opened my eyes and he was still there. I started crying and really tried to wake up my aunt.  I was shaking her, saying her name and shaking her some more, but she was out cold and would not wake up. Over and over again,I would turn towards my aunt and snuggle up to her and then I would turn around and this thing would still be there looking at me.

This thing stayed until dawn when I heard the medicine man in the next tipi wake up. When I heard this elder cough, it comforted me because it meant that I was not alone. In my prayers, I started to thank this old man for saving me and guess what? The thing went away.
