I was especially close to my father the first nine years of my life. My father died on Friday, May 13th, 1977 when I was nine and left my brother and I an inheritance to be awarded when I was 18. I have always felt that he was close by.

On my 18th birthday I was thirteen weeks pregnant, and I borrowed my brother's car to go to the county and collect the monies.  It was a snowy and icy morning when I lost control and had a car accident, taking down a telephone pole and totalling the car, while the electronic ignition caused the auto to catch fire. I was thrown from the driver's seat into the hatch of the Trans Am with my long wool coat covering me. A gentleman from a neighboring house came running out to the scene of the accident but did not notice me unconscious in the hatch.

He began to walk away from the car, but then he heard me screaming "You're not real!"  "Please someone help!  I'm blind." and "Go Away, I'm scared" and other things that sounded at the time to be nonsense.  The gentleman came running back and broke the hatch glass with a large rock and pulled me out to safety just as the fire was reaching the back seat. It was just in the nick of time. I had broken bones among other serious injuries.

He got me to his house steps and when I could finally see, I searched around the crowd. I was looking for my father. He had spoken to me in the hatch of that car. He told me that everything would be ok and to yell out for help. My "Daddy" said that he loved me and would take care of me. He tried to soothe me, but I was frightened. I tried to open my eyes to see him but I saw nothing but black, which scared me further.  It had been so many years since I had even heard his voice or smelled "his smell."    That day brought back a floood of memories for me.  I was amazed that I actually smelled him.  I know that my father came to my rescue. He woke me up to call for help before the fire reached me.

The neighbor who saved me later said that he dreamed the next few nights of an older man bringing him roses and thanking him profusely.  He hadn't associated the two until we talked.   My father and  Peter, my neighbor, saved my life and the life of my unborn child and for that and the experience I am forever grateful and aware.
