On October 6, 1967 at approximately 9 p.m. in the evening I had experienced all the tell-tale signs of giving birth (about 8 prior hours of pain, broken water, pain, muscle spasms in the back, PAIN, and more pain). As this was my first child my doctor told me I would probably not give birth for hours or maybe even days yet. As my labor pains were about 2 minutes apart, my dear mother called the doctor, then the hospital, and insisted on my going there for delivery. I, at the age of 19, thought that if I had to bear this for hours and days more there surely must be something wrong. I knew that birth was not to be expected to be an easy - but this was a seemingly impossible feat!
Upon entering the emergency room I was given a cot and told to undress. I had to stand or lay down as sitting was just impossible. Finally after another hour of being ignored a very nice nurse's aid came to look at me. Within one minute she surveyed my condition and announced "Oh my, there's the baby's head!" Soon I was whisked away to the delivery room.
As the baby was now coming fast there was no time for prepping or anesthesia. An oxygen mask was shoved over my mouth and nose and several white-coated people started to work on my body. What seemed like hours later and after waves of excruciating pain I heard over and over, "Push! No don't push! Push! No, don't push!"
Finally when I thought I could not bear it any longer, suddenly there was a bright light in front of my face. A loud ringing was in my ears, and I could only hear my own breathing inside the mask. The pain was gone and I had no feeling in my body. The light was beautiful and soothing. I found out later that this was the moment that my son chose to come into this world. Despite the absence of any anesthesia I did not feel the birth, the scalpel cut given to ease the birth, or the placenta being delivered. My son's head had turned and caught on one of my bones trying to come out and they had had to reach in and turn him. So the cutting was very much more than the average episiotomy.
Soon after I felt someone slapping me and shouting "Marie, are you there?" over and over and shouting about vital signs. I then was aroused and began my life with my son. I often wondered at this phenomena at the time of birth and if anyone else shared such an experience.
