My Father's Rainbow

My father took my family on many trips around the state of Michigan when we were growing up. Each and every summer he took us to a new place where we could learn to appreciate the beauty of nature. Sadly, my father died of cancer about 6 months before my wedding. I know he wished he could have lived to see my wedding day but his cancer spread quicker than we had hoped.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon in parts of northern Michigan that were favorite sites of my father's. I somehow knew that I would be closer to my father's loving spirit when I visited his favorite camping and hiking spots. On the first day of our honeymoon, we arrived at Palm Book State Park where the Big Spring is located. This bubbling spring is a tranquil spot and has a small raft that floats you across the surface of the aqua water. Below, you can see the fish, bubbling spring, and tree roots through the clear water.

As my husband and I approached the walkway to the raft, it suddenly started to rain very hard. We ducked under a visitor map that had a small roof.  It was just big enough to shelter the two of us.  There had been quite a few people on the raft and in the park, but they quickly ran to their cars at the onset of this rainfall and left. We were the only people left in the park.

I looked skyward and said aloud, "Please, Daddy, make the rain stop. I wanted to show my husband the beautiful spring you had shared with me years ago." My husband touched me softly and pointed in front of us--there was a rainbow a few feet away which we could almost touch. I was suddenly enveloped in a warm feeling as I stared at the glorious colors of this rainbow. My husband quickly snapped a few pictures of this wonderful vision and we both realized the rain was subsiding. Our rainbow slowly vanished and the sun shone bright.

We walked over to the raft hand in hand, floated across the spring and spent an hour taking in the beauty of the place. I didn't want to leave because I knew my father was there with us. He had sent all the other people running to their cars in the rain and then allowed us the time alone in the sun at his favorite spot. To this day, I can look at the photos of my father's rainbow and know he is waiting for me at his favorite nature sites of the North.
