The following is a former winner of the Amazing but Incredibly True Story Contest.
I have spinal muscular atrophy III. After mysteriously contracting a series of rare illnesses (one of which can only be acquired through contact with birds!) I was sent to live in a nursing facility. To pass the time, I volunteered with the activities department.
On this particular day, I couldn't bring myself to leave my room. I just felt as if I needed to do something, and that if I left my room, it would be a mistake. It was such an eerie, confusing mood to be in. I turned on the television and was scanning the channel listing for something interesting to watch. At 5:18pm the DJ of our local station announced that he was going to play "At this Moment" by Billy Vera. I remember the time, because I had to make a call at five-thirty to my mom, so I looked at the clock to make sure I didn't miss it.
I decided to listen to the song, and began trancing out. The music was really soothing. When the chorus came on for the last time, I heard a voice say, "Donna died." I sat up and looked around, but no one was in the room. I figured I must have said it, and felt really guilty, especially since I knew my friend Donna was in the hospital. It seemed strange, especially since she was only there to have a broken ankle operated on.
I was shaken and feeling guilty, so I left the room, and went to sit on the patio for an hour. When I went back to my room, I was told that I had three messages from Bill, Donna's husband. I tried reaching him, but the line was busy. I tried him all day the next day, and the line was still busy. The third day, a mutual friend of all of ours called me. She told me that the reason I couldn't get through was because Bill was making "arrangements."
"What for?" I asked her.
There was a pause, then she said, "Donna died."
When I asked her when she had died, she said two days before her call to me.
A week later, Bill called me up, and we were talking about Donna. Apparently, something burst in her brain, and killed her almost instantly. When I asked him what time of the day she died, he said, "The doctor told me the time of death was 5:18 in the afternoon."
