I was completing a training session with an eye care company I had joined in May of 1987 when this particular incident happened. I had been hired as a sales representative for the Milwaukee, Wisconsin territory and my first week of training was conducted in St. Louis. Technical medical information as well as sales strategies were part of the items covered. On the last day in St Louis the trainer had shared with me the news that the previous representative had completely destroyed a business relationship with the largest national client in the territory and I would have to salvage that relationship to be successful in my sales efforts. As I got on the plane to return to Milwaukee this issue was dominating my thoughts.
Not long after the flight got off the ground I started reading a copy of the airline magazine and while I was viewing an eye-care related advertisement the man next to me commented on its content. He was the Milwaukee based regional manager for the national account that my trainer had told me about. By the time the flight reached Milwaukee we had gotten to know each other and had established a time to meet and discuss business. That client was eventually one of my most successful accounts and the relationship started on that flight home was one I will never forget.
