The Yingling Family History

The name Juengling appears to mean youth, young, or youthful in that it is very similar to the German name Jungling which means youth, youthful, boyish. 32 A significant amount of the following information on the Yingling family was derived from "The Yingling Genealogy" 28 which was compiled and published by Claude J. Rahn, 2012 28th Avenue, Vero Beach, Florida [date unknown]. Mr. Rahn is a descendant of John Yingling (1719-1774) through John Yingling Jr. (1750-1836). Extracts from "The Yingling Genealogy" were provided by Mrs. William Earl Yingling (Eleanor Marion Slaughenhoupt). Permission from Claude J. Rahn for use within was attempted, however, the forwarding address for Mr. Rahn expired.

The spelling of the Yingling surname is in common use and accepted by most of the descendants of the original German settler. The original spelling was Juengling. The spelling evolved with several variations throughout America to include Jungling, Yengling, Yenglin, Yingland, Yingelling, and even England.

Christian Yengling (Immigrant Ancestor)

Christian Yengling born circa 1690 arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania about 1710 with others of the Reformed Faith. The Juengling family originated from along the Palatinate in Germany.

The Palatinate is a former division of Bavaria. 29 Rhineland Palatinate is currently a state in western Germany with the capital of Mainz. Mainz can be located at 50 degrees North and eight degrees East; just south of Wiesbaden, Germany; and slightly southwwest of Frankfurt, Germany. 30 This area is located along the German Rhine River 31 which is 825 miles long and winds its way from the German and Swiss Alps through the central uplands and plateaus in western Germany; and then through the coastal lowlands and interior plains into the North Sea.

Christian Yengling settled in Salford Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Twenty-six years following his 1758 death, Salford Township was merged into Montgomery County when Montgomery County, Pennsylvania was formed in 1784.

In one of the earliest lists of land owners in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, Christian Jungling [apparently with the "e" being replaced with a "u"] is included as owning 20 acres of land in Sulford (sic) Township prior to the year 1734. In Christian Yengling's will signed in German script and dated January 22, 1755; his signature was Christian Yengling.

It is this Jacob Yingling who was mentioned in the Slaughenhoupt Family History dated June 1, 1992; and identified as the earliest Yingling mentioned within reference document 7 who lived near Hollidaysburg (a small town in Blair County south-east of Altoona, Pennsylvania). Jacob Yingling may have in fact lived earlier in Maryland and then later moved to the Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania area. Jacob Yingling and his wife had 11 children (6 sons and 5 daughters).

Louisa Yingling

Daughter Louisa Yingling married William Baker, son of Dr. John and Elizabeth Baker; and brother of Elizabeth Baker. The brother of Louisa Yingling (Joseph Yingling -- Ancestor) married the sister of William Baker (Elizabeth Baker; daughter of Dr. John and Elizabeth Baker).

Anne Marie Yingling

Daughter Anne Marie Yingling may be Maria (possibly Yingling) who married Michael Slaugenhaupt in Frederick County, Maryland in 1797 or 1798. 59 Michael Slaugenhaupt (Schlaughenhaupt) was born March 30, 1775 when his father Philip Slaugenhaupt was 20 years old and his mother Anna Maria (Baer) Slaughenhaupt was 21 years old 64. Michael and Maria (Yingling) Slaugenhaupt resided in Berks, Adams, Blair, and Clarion Counties, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Frederick Yingling

Son Frederick Yingling was born in 1784 when his father Jacob Yingling was 32 years old and died in 1868 at the age of 84. It appears likely that his birth occurred in the present location of Carroll County, Maryland. Frederick Yingling then moved to Huntingdon County, (next to Blair County) Pennsylvania circa 1795 accompanied by his then 19 year old nephew (Joseph Yingling -- Ancestor).

Joseph Yingling (Ancestor)

Son Joseph Yingling was the oldest child of Jacob Yingling having been born December 17, 1776 (the same year as the birth of the United States of America). Joseph Yingling was born when his father Jacob Yingling was 24 years old. Reference document 7 indicates that Joseph Yingling was born near Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, however, it appears more likely that his birth occurred in the present location of Carroll County, Maryland, with his moving to Huntingdon County, (next to Blair County) Pennsylvania circa 1795 at about the age of 19. This move was accompanied by his uncle (Frederick Yingling, brother of Jacob Yingling). It was in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania where Joseph Yingling most likely met and then later married on November 10, 1801 Elizabeth Baker, daughter of Dr. John Baker. At the time of their wedding, Joseph Yingling was 25 years old and Elizabeth Baker was 18 years old herself having been born on April 14, 1783 most likely in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.

Joseph Yingling returned to Carroll County, Maryland in 1802 (the year following their marriage) [presumably to visit family if not to introduce his wife to other family members]. During this trip, Joseph Yingling was baptised as an adult in Immanuel Ref. & Lutheran Church, Manchester, Maryland. It is apparent that also as a result of this trip, William Baker (brother of Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling accompanied Joseph and Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling; met and then later married Joseph Yingling's sister Louisa Yingling.

The last will and Testament of Dr. John Baker 20 dated August 11, 1805 (apparently shortly before his death) provides for "My trusty and well beloved friend Joseph Yingling, and my son John Baker" to be the executors of the estate. Left in the will for daughter Elizabeth Baker was 31 pounds and 3 shillings. A copy of the will was provided by John P. Mills, Register of Wills, Courthouse, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania 16652 through Mrs. Larry Jamison, RD# 2 Box 56 Parker, Pennsylvania 16049.

Records list Joseph Yingling as living in Allegheny Township Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania in 1810, but not thereafter. It is therefore, estimated that Joseph and Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling moved from Huntingdon County (near Hollidaysburg, Blair County) northwest to West Freedom, Perry Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania circa 1812 - 1844. Specific motivation for this move remains unclear, however, the inheritance that Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling received from the Estate of her father (Dr. John Baker) may account for Joseph and Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling owning approximately 600 acres of land "much of it cleared and improved" 7. Joseph Yingling is mentioned on page 9 of "Perry Township A Bicentennial Perspective" 15 as having sold the first lots in West Freedom, Pennsylvania in 1848.

It is quite possible that another sister of Joseph Yingling (Mary Yingling) married another brother of Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling (John Baker - who like Joseph Yingling was the exector of Dr. John Baker's will). It is also possible then that John and Mary (Yingling) Baker moved to Clarion County along with Joseph and Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling.

Joseph Yingling was also a "postmaster and one of the few Democrats who held such a commission under a Republican administration." 15

Joseph Yingling and family were Methodists.  15 Within West Freedom, "the first M. E. [Methodist Episcopal] Church was built on donated land from Joseph Yingling. It was located east of the village above the cemetery."Joseph Yingling died in his home January 1848 at the age of 71. 28  Prior to his death, Joseph Yingling would have been able to see at least one grand-son (Elijah Slaughenhoupt) grow to 8 years of age. Intestate, and letters of administration were issued to his eldest son David Yingling and Jared Howe, December 29, 1848. Many of his children and descendants are buried in the Methodist cemetary at West Freedom, Perry Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.

The "Genealogical and Personal Dictionary of Allegheny Valley," Vol. III, page 1052 contains some data concerning the family of Joseph Yingling. 7 This information was undoubtably obtained from the Bible of Joseph and his wife, which was understood to have come into the possession of their daughter Frances Yingling (wife of Jacob Slaughenhoupt and later Michael Best). There appears to be some validity doubts identified in "The Yingling Genealogy" concerning information contained within page 1052 of "Genealogical and Personal Dictionary of Allegheny Valley," Vol. III. These concerns include details which do not appear to be in accord with other documentary records of the early generations of the Yinglings. Some of the information contained within the "Genealogical and Personal Dictionary of Allegheny Valley," Vol. III, page 1052 was probably furnished by George Yingling (1829-1914) son of David B. Yingling (1803-1870) eldest son of Joseph Yingling.

It is believed that Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling outlived Joseph Yingling by about 10 years although her death does not show-up in currently available records. It is known they had given birth to 10 children (4 daughters and 6 sons) who appear to have lived their lives locally in the Perry Township area of Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Considerable data was furnished to "The Yingling Genealogy" by Mr. H. Richard Yingling of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, (a descendant of Joseph and Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling), who devoted a great deal of time and patience.

A. David B. Yingling

Son David B. Yingling was born on February 20, 1803 when his father Joseph Yingling was 26 years old and his mother Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling was 20 years old. At the age of 24, David B. Yingling married Mary Howe on March 15, 1827 who was 19 years old having been born in 1808. Mary (Howe) Yingling died on November 5, 1866 at the age of 58. David B. Yingling (eldest son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling) and Jared Howe (probably related to Mary (Howe) Yingling) were issued with the intestate, and letters of administration concerning the Last will and Testament of Joseph Yingling. Together, David B. and Mary (Howe) Yingling had 11 children.

David B. Yingling died June 8, 1870 at the age of 67. A tombstone for David B. Yingling can be located in the West Freedom Cemetary, West Freedom, Pennsylvania.

Elliot H. Yingling married Margaret Fruit Troutman who was born on February 5, 1827. Margaret Fruit (Troutman) Yingling died prior to circa 1913. Elliot H. Yingling later married Mary Zeigler of Louistown, Pennsylvania. Elliot H. Yingling subsequently died February 14, 1905 at the age of 78. The 1850 census data identified a Richard Yingling who was born circa 1830, and was a carpenter living with Elliot H. Yingling.

George W. Yingling was a soldier during the War Between the States (Civil War). 7 and is mentioned extensively in the "Perry Township A Bicentennial Perspective". 15 George Yingling, H. W. Jordan, and S. S. Jordan are identified on page 9 as opening a drug and variety store. Additionally, a full double side page (pages 12 and 13) is devoted showing the indenture dated July 28, 1883 where the school directors of Perry Township bought from George W. Yingling and Hannah his wife land for $330.00 for the purpose of building a two room schoolhouse which was still standing as of 1976 and being restored by the Perry Township Historical Committee. A photo is also displayed on page 8 showing a boarding house owned by George Yingling in 1890.

This was the era when being a Postmaster was a political appointment indicative of some level of political influence. George W. and Hannah (Gardner) Yingling both served as Postmasters for West Freedom, Clarion County, Pennsylvania with George W. Yingling serving from August 21, 1897 until being replaced by his wife Hannah (Gardner) Yingling October 19, 1897. The reason for the short service time (2 months) for George W. Yingling is not known especially since he lived until 1914. Hannah (Gardner) Yingling continued to serve for six and half years until April 29, 1904. George W. Yingling died at the age of 85 in 1914. Hannah (Gardner) Yingling died at the age of 75 in 1906. During their lifetime, George W. and Hannah (Gardner) Yingling had 9 children.
