Scotland
King Robert the Bruce, a sentimental favorite of the Scots since the Middle Ages is said to be an ancestor of the United States President James K. Polk.
Most of the earliest Scottish settlers to America did not come from Scotland. They came from Ulster, Ireland. In the northeast corner of Ireland, Ulster looks across the narrow North Channel at Scotland. Modern Ulster includes the country of Londonderry in Northern Ireland. The Pollock family emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland during the late 1600's to the Londonderry County area of Northern Ireland.
An American President
In Londonderry County of Northern Ireland lived a Robert Pollock married to Magdalena Tasker. Both emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland approximately 1694 to Somerset County, Maryland. Their son, William Pollock was born in 1701 and married Mary Knox. William and Mary Pollock then moved to Hopewell Township in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.4 William and Mary Pollock had a son named Ezekiel Pollock who was born approximately 1737. It was about this time frame when the family moved to North Carolina (approximately 1738 or a few years later) that the family name was, for some reason shortened to Polk. Ezekiel Polk married Mary Wilson (daughter of Samuel Wilson) and together had a son named Samuel Polk who was born in 1771. Samuel Polk married Jane Knox (born 1773) and together on November 2, 1795 in Mecklenburg, North Carolina gav e birth to a future United States President James K. Polk. Samuel and Jane Polk died in 1827 and 1848; respectively.

The same Pollock family who emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to Londonderry area (Coleraine) Ireland had as a member a Dr. Thomas Pollock. Together, this Scotch-Irish (also known as an Ulster Scot) family of had 10 children (5 sons and 5 daughters).

VII. Robert Pollock
Son Robert Pollock either didn't leave Ireland, or was one of three brothers who came to America to join the youngest brother Charles Pollock and then went south to North Carolina. If he did go to North Carolina, circa 1750, it may have been more than coincidental with the move to North Carolina circa 1738 (or a few years later) of William and Mary Pollock (great-grandparents of United States President James K. Polk).
VIII. James Pollock
Son James Pollock was born in Ireland in 1728; married to Mary Heron; and died in 1812 at the age of 84. James and Mary (Heron) Pollock lived in Ligoner Valley of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and had 8 children (5 sons and 3 daughters).

He died at the age of 70 in 1794 after seeing 5 great-grandchildren born (of at least 10 grandchildren). John Pollock married twice. He first married Catherine Campbell. Given the era in history, it was more than likely that his first wife died rather than there being a divorce (although a divorce cannot be ruled-out). His second wife was Eleanor Snell who was a niece of Benjamin Franklin. John and Eleanor (Snell) Pollock had four children (3 sons and 1 daughter).
A. Eleanor Pollock
Daughter Eleanor Pollock was born in 1760 when her father John Pollock was 36 years old and died in 1823 at the age of 63. She married James Armstrong who had come to America in 1786.

D. John Pollock
Son John Pollock was born in 1768 when his father John Pollock was 44 years old and died in 1772 at the age of 4 years old.
X. Charles Pollock (Immigrant Ancestor)
Son Charles Pollock (youngest son of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Pollock of Coleraine, Ireland) was born in 1732 in Coleraine, Ireland and came to America circa 1750 at the age of 18. Charles Pollock came alone and was the first of 3 or 4 siblings who would later emigrate to America. Charles Pollock settled in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania initially and began farming possibly as an indentured servant. Charles Pollock subsequently moved to Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
The Scotch-Irish numbered about 250,000 in the colonies before the Revolutionary War (twice as many as there were Irish). In Pennsylvania, many Ulster-Scots (Scotch-Irish) settled west of the Susquehanna River partly because the eastern part of the state was pretty well filled by William Penn's Quakers. It was said that German immigrants, and others were happy to have the Scotch-Irish serve as buffers against the Indians. Many of the Scotch-Irish successfully took up farming; raising cattle; selling hides; and sometimes floating meat (at considerable profit) downstream to awaiting "English" cargo ships.
A year following his arrival, Charles Pollock was joined by three brothers, 1) Dr. Thomas Pollock who was 8 years older than Charles and subsequently returned to Ireland; 2) possibly Robert Pollock who, if he did come to America subsequently went to North Carolina; and 3) James or John Pollock one of which subsequently settled in the vicinity of Lewistown, in what was called Buffalo Valley.
In 1763 at the age of 31, Charles Pollock married Agness Steele, from the neighborhood of Lewistown who was 20 years old having been born in 1743. Agness Steele was a member of the old Steele family of Lancaster and Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania. It is possible Charles Pollock and Agness Steele met in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania then settling in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania; however, the shifting boundaries of the counties may misrepresent moving around that did not actually occur.
Charles Pollock became a Private in the Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Militia some time near to or during the American Revolutionary War. It can be postulated that Charles Pollock may have known Private Robert Fruit who was also in the Pennsylvania Militia for Northumberland County. Years later, Robert Fruit's twin daughters would marry two sons of Charles Pollock. It is also likely that Charles Pollock knew Sergeant Richard McClure who became Robert Fruit's father-in-law as well as a revolutionary soldier of McClure's Fort in Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania . However, Sergeant Richard McClure died in 1774; therefore, it cannot be confirmed whether or not Private Charles Pollock and Sergeant Richard McClure actually knew each other.
Charles Pollock serving in the Revolutionary War was consistent with descriptions of the Scotch-Irish of Pennsylvania who generally supported the Revolutionary cause by providing most of the officers and men for a sturdy group called the Pennsylvania Line.6
It is known that Charles Pollock survived the Revolutionary War and that he and wife Agness (Steele) Pollock had five sons. Charles Pollock died in March 1795 at the age of 63 and was buried in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
Reference 7indicated that Charles Pollock was a farmer and died near Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Additionally, Charles and Agnes (Steele) Pollock had ten children of which two died in infancy with three dying in early life. This reference also provides a different, more likely spelling of Agnes (Steele) Pollock. Agnes Steele was the daughter of Adam Steele.
Within five years of the death of her husband Charles Pollock, Agness (Steele) Pollock; 5 sons; and their families moved circa 1800 to Erie County, Pennsylvania.6It is unknown why this move occurred. Reference 7indicates they settled in the spring of 1800 in Waterford Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania.

In 1801, James Pollock married Mary Steele, his first cousin, and raised a large family.
James Pollock received quite a bit of notoriety for his time. He was a prosperous farmer who received a liberal education; possessed a high order of intelligence and respected judgment. James Pollock became known as Captain Pollock from being in service of the United States in 1795 when George Washington was President. Captain Pollock was the master of transportation of supplies from the Ohio River near the current area of Cincinnati. Captain Pollock was subordinate to General Wayne whose troops were stationed at Greenville, Pennsylvania. This is the same General Wayne who made a "permanent" peace treaty wit h the Indians ending hostilities.
During the initial construction of the turnpike (not to be confused with the modern day Pennsylvania Turnpike), Captain James Pollock constructed between Waterford and Meadville a portion of this road (mile and a quarter). Captain James Pollock served as county commissioner in 1830; and in 1836 was elected, in company with the Honorable Thomas H. Sill, as a member of the convention to amend the constitution of the State [Commonwealth] of Pennsylvania.
The constitutional convention met in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in May 1837 and then adjourned in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Other attendees to the convention included John Sergent, Chauncy, Meredith, Scott, Judge Hopkinson, Walter Howard, Dickey, Biddle, and Thaddeus Stevens [later to become a U.S. Congressman and leader of the Radical Republicans during the U.S. Reconstruction and described as a master of Congressional infighting, parliamentary tactics, and blunt speaking. Thaddeaus was once called a "rude jouster in political and personal warfare". So driven to help the freed slaves, Thaddeus was buried in an integrated cemetery in order to "illustrate in my death the principles which I advocated through a long life, Equality of Man before his Creator."]. Captain Pollock had the universal respect of his associates at the convention. Though not a public speaker, his judgment was held in high estimation [esteem].

The marriage of Sarah "Sally" Fruit to William Pollock in 1798 was approximately two years after the marriage of her sister Margaret "Mary" Fruit to Thomas Pollock (William Pollock's brother).
At about the age of 27, William and Sarah "Sally" (Fruit) Pollock moved to Erie County, Pennsylvania with William Pollock's mother Agness (Steele) Pollock; four brothers and their families during the turn of the century circa 1800.
It is known that William and Sarah "Sally" (Fruit) Pollock along with Thomas and Margaret "Mary" (Fruit) Pollock moved south from Erie County, Pennsylvania to Clarion County, Pennsylvania (then known as Armstrong County). William and Sarah "Sally" (Fruit) Pollock settled east of Parker (east of the Allegheny River) where William engaged in farming. William Pollock also, apparently worked for Brown, Floyd, and Co. for about five years.
