George Melvin Slaughenhoupt(Ancestor)
George Melvin Slaughenhoupt was born April 3, 1874 when his father Elijah Slaughenhoupt was 35 years old and his mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 32 years old. It is the subsequent marriage of George Melvin Slaughenhoupt to Mary Shick Hilliard that connects the Baker, Jeungling (Yingling), Downing, Hagerty, and Slaughenhoupt families to the McClure, Fruit, Steele, Pollock, Shick, Stewart, and Hilliard families.
An automobile trip document 19 written by George Melvin Slaughenhoupt in September 1914 chronicled a ten day vacation taken by several family members. The trip began on Tuesday, September 1, 1914, and ended Thursday, September 10, 1914. The whereabouts of the original manuscript of this reference document is unknown, but a fairly readable copy was provided and replicated herein. The following paragraphs are intended to provide background, results of an analysis, and commentary on the information contained within this reference document.
Many things taken for granted in the 1990's were either a novelty in 1914, or simply not yet invented. For example, having oneself weighed during a vacation was important enough to have the results included within the trip write-up.
In 1914, women had not yet been granted the right to vote; very few cars existed, and those that did were relatively expensive; a crude network of roads was forming - there was no "Interstate" highway system; road conditions varied widely from place to place; the first commercial radio station had not yet broadcasted -- no car radios, nor tape players; fast food stops had not been conceived; sound had not yet been made as part of a movie; and finally, places and things of interest then would seem of less interest now.
The "Automobile Trip" may seem humorous; and indeed it appears that George Melvin Slaughenhoupt intended it to be somewhat humorous when for example he blames the "Cook" in forgetting to bring along butter; talks about the cow who got "Bumped" with the car; and laughs at the "Chauffers" who had to make a detour after ignoring a well placed warning sign. Although humorous in places, the "Automobile Trip" provides great insight into an earlier era. Clearly, with the automobile being a new form of transportation and possibly still in competition with the horse, it is interesting to note that George Melvin Slaughenhoupt provides a detailed account of miles travelled between points and the time needed for travelling. In addition, folks living in early 1990's can relate to the gasoline prices of 1914 which were 15 cents per gallon.
Travelling the road was certainly of concern to the motorists of 1914. In several places, the "Automobile Trip" gives an account on the changing road conditions and road types. In the end, George Melvin Slaughenhoupt sums up the trip with the report that they travelled "over very good roads". George Melvin Slaughenhoupt also provides a glimpse of a time when there would be found within large cities a mixture of the old and new with the descriptions of the various forms of transporation that he saw in Niagara Falls.
Family, family, family; obviously, in 1914 family was the substance of having good times. These twelve people of which most were related travelled together for 10 days, encountered two flat tires, one accident (bumped cow), three wrong ways/detour, one fire alarm during the middle of the night, one long wait for dinner, and the acquisition of some coon dogs. However, in the end, George Melvin Slaughenhoupt described their trip as lovely, royally entertaining, and enjoyable having travelled with "a jolly good bunch". Another item was included on the itinerary of this trip - "After supper we went to Presbyterian church, 15 minute sermon, good music, out at 830..."
Individuals who travelled during this vacation are the following:
Mr. and Mrs. D. Galey
Mr. D. Galey was the driver of one car. He is referred to as Mr. Galey instead of his first name. Perhaps it was more customary in 1914 to refer to friends as Mr. or Mrs., but it appears that Mr. D. Galey was either an older acquaintance of George Melvin Slaughenhoupt or possibly a senior co-worker. Records have not revealed any family ties between Mr., Mrs. D. Galey, and the other travellers. Their ages are not known, but Mrs. Galey did outweigh her husband 182 to 141 pounds.
James Pollock
James Pollock is referred to as Uncle James. This is James Montgomery Pollock born September 15, 1849 who was the brother of Nancy Jane (Pollock) Hilliard (mother of Mary Shick (Hilliard) Slaughenhoupt).
