Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt
Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was born in West Freedom, Clarion County, Pennsylvania on April 9, 1839 when his mother Frances (Yingling) Slaughenhoupt was just 16 years old (just about one week before turning 17). It appears that his father Jacob Slaughenhoupt, was also a young teenager being only about 14 years old. The year 1839 was the same year that part of Toby Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania reorganized into Perry Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. By this time, the concept of frame houses, glass windows, and carriages had been introduced into Clarion County.7, 15
In "The Yingling Genealogy"28, Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt is identified as Lige Slaughenhaupt Best; son of Michael and Frances (Yingling Slaughenhoupt) Best, born April 4, 1839 and dying March 22, 1920 at the age of 81. This information conflicts with reference7 which indicates that Elijah was the only son of Jacob and Frances (Yingling) Slaughenhoupt. The information about Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt provided to "The Yingling Genealogy" was very likely verbal and possibly based upon the spelling of Lige which if pronounced phonically (LI GE) could represent a shortened version of (or a nickname for) Elijah. It is interesting to note that upon marrying Frances (Yingling) Slaughenhoupt, had Michael Best adopted Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt, the descendants of Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt might today have the surname of Best.
Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was reared in the home of his grandmother Elizabeth (Baker) Yingling and educated in the public schools. While it is known that Elijah's grandfather Joseph Yingling lived until Elijah was 8 years old and presumably in the same home, the fate of Elijah's father Jacob Slaughenhoupt cannot be determined. It appears that the father of Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt died while Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was a young child which can account for Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt being reared in the home of his grandmother.7
When considered still a young boy, Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt began working as a clerk in a store in West Lebanon, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. At the age of 22, Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt returned in 1861 to Clarion County, Pennsylvania. It is not known why he returned; however, a couple of events that occurred that year may have been cause. In April of 1861, the start of the United States War Between the States (Civil War) began. Records have not, however, emerged indicating any direct involvement of Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt in the Civil War. In September 1861, the worst flood in the history of Clarion County, Pennsylvania occurred. All bridges along the streams were washed out.15 It cannot be confirmed whether news of this flood prompted Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt to return home.
Following his return in 1861 to Clarion County, Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt began to work as a clerk for a William Moore of Callensburg. It cannot be confirmed at this time if this William Moore was the same William Moore who in the previous summer (1860) had attempted to start-up an iron furnace one mile east of Dutch Hill.15 During that attempt, the boiler exploded killing two men, William Kortz and Benjamin Kogan. Later, Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt worked in West Freedom with H. Reil.
Resulting from his early years of working, Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt had become thoroughly familiar with retail mercantile methods and had accumulated sufficient capital to make a start in business for himself. He formed a partnership with his half-brother Joseph N. Best; son of Michael and Frances (Yingling Slaughenhoupt) Best and were together for several years engaged in business in Perryville, Perry Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.
During these apparent busy years of Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt, a wedding occurred. At the age of 26, on November 9, 1865 Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt married Isabella Hagerty who was 23 years old having been born in 1842. At the time of the wedding, the War Between the States (Civil War) was over; President Abraham Lincoln was dead from an assassin's bullet; President Andrew Johnson was in office; the Union had been saved. However, Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt's father - Silas Hagerty had not returned from the Civil War having earlier enlisted in Company G of the 103rd Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry joining the Union Army and never returning from the Civil War; probably dying in or just after his release from a Confederate prison camp.
Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt served as a Postmaster at the West Freedom, Clarion County, Pennsylvania Post Office from February 4, 1869 (at the age of 30) until March 10, 1871 at the age of 32.15
It appears that in 1890 at the age of 51, Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt moved his family from West Freedom to about six miles west to Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.63
Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt seemed to have a series of unfortunate business luck. The business partnership between he and his half-brother Joseph N. Best for unknown reasons dissolved. Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt subsequently was associated in business with J. A. Slaughenhoupt [Records do not otherwise exist to date on J. A. Slaughenhoupt although a Jacob Alvin Slaughenhoupt was an active businessman in Dubois, Pennsylvania]. Nonetheless, the burning of their store dissolved that firm.7
Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt also had been interested in oil production and was in a partnership with two of his sons; but sold out his interest after and probably because of the accidental death of the elder son (Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt) who was "killed by the clutch of a gas engine" on February 8, 1903 or 1904. The death of this son occurred when Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt was 35 or 36 years old and when Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 64 or 65 years old. Elijah Slaughenhoupt then worked as a clerk in West Monterey and Perryville, Pennsylvania until 1909 at the age of 70.
Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was a Republican. For eleven years, he served as a tax collector. He was a member of the Parker Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Circa 1913, Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt resided on a small tract of 12 acres lying on the outskirts of Perryville, Pennsylvania. Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt died in 1918 at the age of 76. Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt died two years later on March 20, 1920 at the age of 81. Both Elijah Y. [Yingling] and Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church and are buried in the Perryville Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. The spelling on the tombstone for Elijah is Elija. Elijah Y. [Yingling] and Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt had 10 children (4 sons and 6 daughters).

Daughter Edith Slaughenhoupt was born October 5, 1866 one year after the marriage of Elijah Y. [Yingling] and Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt when her father Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 27 years old and her mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 24 years old. Edith Slaughenhoupt married Charles Levins and lived circa 1913 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Charles and Edith (Slaughenhoupt) Levins had four children.

B. Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt
Son Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt was born December 21, 1867 when his father Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 28 years old and his mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 25 years old. Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt married Lydia Fenton. At the age of 35 or 36 and in oil production partnership with his father and one brother, Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt was accidently killed by the "clutch of a gas engine" on February 8, 1903 or 1904. Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt is buried in the Perryville Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania near his father-in-law and mother-in-law. The tombstone for Herbert Wade Slaughenhoupt identifies his death date as 1903.
C. Blanche Slaughenhoupt
Daughter Blanche Slaughenhoupt was born January 22, 1869 when her father Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 30 years old and her mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 27 years old. Blanche Slaughenhoupt married Homer Mahood. Circa 1913, Homer and Blanche (Slaughenhoupt) Mahood lived in Emlenton, Pennsylvania and had two children.

D. Jessie A. Slaughenhoupt
Daughter Jessie A. Slaughenhoupt was born August 19, 1870 when her father Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 31 years old and her mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 28 years old. It appears that in 1890 at the age of 20, Jessie A. Slaughenhoupt moved with her family from West Freedom to about six miles west to Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.63 Jessie A. Slaughenhoupt married Americus C. Fox who was born in 1866 and died in 1919 at the age of 53. It is unknown if Americus C. Fox is related to Frank Fox who married Jessie's sister Fanny. Circa 1913, Americus C. and Jessie A. (Slaughenhoupt) Fox lived in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania. Americus C. and Jessie A. (Slaughenhoupt) Fox are both buried in the Perryville Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. It appears that Americus C. and Jessie A. (Slaughenhoupt) Fox had at least one son.

Son O. Cecil Fox was born November 25, 1895 when his father Americus C. Fox was 29 years old and his mother Jessie A. (Slaughenhoupt) Fox was 25 years old. O. Cecil Fox was a World War I Private and died on August 6, 1981 at the age of 85. O. Cecil Fox is buried near his parents in the Perryville Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.
E. Fanny Elizabeth Slaughenhoupt
Daughter Fanny Elizabeth Slaughenhoupt was born February 4, 1872 when her father Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 33 years old and her mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 30 years old. It appears that in 1890 at the age of 18, Fanny Elizabeth Slaughenhoupt moved with her family from West Freedom to about six miles west to Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.63 Fanny Elizabeth Slaughenhoupt married Frank Fox. It is unknown if Frank Fox is related to Americus C. Fox who married Fanny's sister Jessie. Circa 1913, Frank and Fanny Elizabeth (Slaughenhoupt) Fox lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
F. Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt
Son Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt was born August 3, 1876 in West Freedom, Clarion County, Pennsylvania when his father Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 37 years old and his mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 34 years old. Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt married Effie Graham who had been born in 1880.
Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt lived in West Freedom, Clarion County, Pennsylvania until the age of 14 when he and presumably his parents Elijah Y. [Yingling] and Isabel (Haggerty) Slaughenhoupt and entire family moved to Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania in 1890. Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt began maintaining his own residence in Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania ten years later in 1890 at the age of 24.63
From the age of 21 until the age of 29, Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt served as a Postmaster (December 29, 1897 until December 18, 1905) at the Pollock Post Office serving Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.15
On May 7, 1906 at the age of 29, Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt petitioned the Parker City Lodge No. 521 for membership in the Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania and was rejected [for reasons unknown].63 A second petition was filed October 3, 1910 while at the age of 34. This second petition revealed that Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt was a Tel Operator [telegraph operator like brother George Melvin Slaughenhoupt?] for the Pennsylvania Railroad and had resided in Perryville, Pennsylvania (Pollock Post Office) since 1890.
Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt was also an insurance salesman and ironically was killed in an auto accident in 1938 at the age of 62. Effie (Graham) Slaughenhoupt age 58 was also killed in this accident. Both Elmer Elijah and Effie (Graham) Slaughenhoupt are buried in the Perryville Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Elmer Elijah and Effie (Graham) Slaughenhoupt had one son.
i. Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt
Son Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt was born December 8, 1901 when his father Elmer Elijah Slaughenhoupt was 25 years old and his mother Effie (Graham) Slaughenhoupt was 21 years old. At the age of 22, Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt married Regina Bridget McCaffrey on May 14, 1924 who was 24 years old having been born February 25, 1900 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Regina Bridget (McCaffrey) Slaughenhoupt was the daughter of John and Mary (Dowlin) McCaffrey. Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt died at the age of 74 on January 4, 1976 and his widow Regina Bridget (McCaffrey) Slaughenhoupt died October 23, 1986 at the age of 86 in the Greensburg Nursing and Convalescent Center, Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Arthur Ardell and Regina Bridget (McCaffrey) Slaughenhoupt were buried in the Perryville Cemetery, Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Arthur Ardell and Regina (McCaffrey) Slaughenhoupt had two sons.

Son Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt Jr. was born April 4, 1925 when his father Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt was 23 years old and his mother Regina Bridget (McCaffrey) Slaughenhoupt was 25 years old. At the age of 22, Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt Jr. married Natalie Ann Stahlman on April 24, 1947 in Knox, Pennsylvania. In 1954 at the age of 29, Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt Jr. moved his wife and family to Cleveland, Ohio. At the age of 43 in 1968, Arthur Ardel and Natalie Ann (Stahlman) Slaughenhoupt Jr. were divorced. Arthur Ardell Slaughenhoupt Jr. remarried on February 14, 1990 at the age of 64 a lady named Dorotha. Arthur Ardel and Natalie Ann (Stahlman) Slaughenhoupt Jr. had three children (1 son and 2 daughters).

Daughter Adda Mae Slaughenhoupt was born March 21, 1878 when her father Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 39 years old and her mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 36 years old. It appears that in 1890 at the age of 12, Adda Mae Slaughenhoupt moved with her family from West Freedom to about six miles west to Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania.63 Adda Mae Slaughenhoupt married Roland R. Lawson. Circa 1913, Roland R. and Adda Mae (Slaughenhoupt) Lawson lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
H. Charles Earl (Harry) Slaughenhoupt
Son Charles Earl (Harry) Slaughenhoupt was born in West Freedom, Clarion County, Pennsylvania on May 4, 1880 when his father Elijah Y. [Yingling] Slaughenhoupt was 41 years old and his mother Isabella (Hagerty) Slaughenhoupt was 38 years old. Reference7 identified an Earl Slaughenhoupt being born May 5, 1880. Pastor Glea Foster83 provided church records that identify this individual as Charles E. Slaughenhoupt born May 4, 1880. A current descendant William C. Slaughenhoupt remembers this individual as Harry Slaughenhoupt. Until the confusion can be resolved, this document shall refer to this individual as Charles Earl (Harry) Slaughenhoupt. About 1890 at the age of 10, Charles Earl (Harry) Slaughenhoupt moved with his family from West Freedom, Clarion County, Pennsylvania about 6 miles west to Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Charles Earl (Harry) Slaughenhoupt appears to have married a lady with a surname of Sinclair. The couple had two children (1 son and 1 daughter).

Earle Sinclair Slaughenhoupt married Alberta Irene Forsyth who was born September 19, 1902. Earle Sinclair Slaughenhoupt died November 12, 1976 at the age of 72. Alberta Irene (Forsyth) Slaughenhoupt died September 29, 1978 at the age of 76. Earle Sinclair and Alberta Irene (Forsyth) Slaughenhoupt had four sons.

Son Earle Sinclair Slaughenhoupt, Jr. was born in West Virginia on March 24, 1928 when his father Earle Sinclair Slaughenhoupt was 23 years old and his mother Alberta Irene (Forsyth) Slaughenhoupt was 25 years old. Earle Sinclair Slaughenhoupt, Jr. married Mary Emma Warden who was born in Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia on June 3, 1932. Earle Sinclair and Mary Emma (Warden) Slaughenhoupt, Jr. had three sons.

Son Jay Paul Slaughenhoupt was born June 17, 1958 in Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia when his father Earle Sinclair Slaughenhoupt, Jr. was 30 years old and his mother Mary Emma (Warden) Slaughenhoupt, Jr. was 26 years old. On December 20, 1980 at the age of 22, in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia, Jay Paul Slaughenhoupt married Denise Lynn Matics who was 21 years old having been born March 25, 1959 in Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia. Denise Lynn (Matics) Slaughenhoupt was the daughter of Dennis Bryan and Helen Faye (Hylbert) Matics. As of 1994, Jay Paul Slaughenhoupt was an Air Force Major and a B-52 bomber pilot. Jay Paul and Denise Lynn (Matics) Slaughenhoupt had two children (1 son and 1 daughter).

Son Mark Earle Slaughenhoupt was born July 21, 1960 in West Virginia when his father Earle Sinclair Slaughenhoupt, Jr. was 32 years old and his mother Mary Emma (Warden) Slaughenhoupt, Jr. was 28 years old. On August 22, 1981 at the age of 21, in Bridgeport, West Virginia, Mark Earle Slaughenhoupt married Sharon Lynn West who was also 21 years old having been born February 14, 1960. Mark Earle and Sharon Lynn (West) Slaughenhoupt had two sons.
